The real power of the PS2 is yet to unfold, and a testament to what the machine can accomplish may soon be realized with LucasArts' upcoming release, Star Wars Star Fighter. Take a gander at the screens to your right, these are in game shots, and we're told the game is fast and smooth to boot. So what's this game all about?

It all begins on Naboo, during the Phantom Menace time period until you eventually end up with a full scale attack on the Droid Assault Ship. You get to control one of three piolots, Rhys, Dallows, Vana Sage and Nym who have personal vendettas against the Trade Federation and must learn to work together to repel the invasion of the Naboo system. Through a series of dogfights with bad villains, you work as a team to accomplish your goals. Rhys is a cocky Naboo pilot-in-training. His Naboo N-1 starfighter is quick, agile, adept at dogfighting and armed with proton torpedoes, laser cannons, and deflector shields. Vana is a Naboo expatriate who roams the galaxy contracting her services as a gun for hire. Her ship, the Guardian, is ultra-fast and equipped with stealth capabilities, sensors, tracking devices and a variety of weaponry. Nym, an alien pirate who lives a Robin Hood existence in the shadows of the Naboo system, pilots the Havoc, a starship outfitted with powerful bombs, lasers, a rotating turret gun, and heavy shielding.

Your fighting takes you into space or through the air on various planets. There are 14 environments all told and you fight up to 50 different vehicle types. With fast action, what appears to be some very beautiful in-game 3D modeling, and an original narrative, this is a title to definitely keep an eye on.

Release date Q1 2000.
