RollOut, provided to me by Bulkypix, is an interesting spin on the platformer genre. Unlike most platformers, RollOut does not task you with controlling the main character. Instead, the main character moves forward by himself. You control icons that tell the character what to do.

The game is about a round, black character named Wabba whose simple goal is to reach the exit door of each stage. Wabba slowly rolls to the right while icons scroll across the screen toward the left. Different icons make Wabba do different things when touched. For example, one makes him jump, and one makes him roll faster. While you touch the screen, all the icons will be deactivated. In addition, swiping to the left will cause the icons to scroll faster. Careful placement and deactivation of the icons leads to victory!

RollOut is the perfect difficulty. It features 50 levels of increasing challenge. Each is timed, and beating a certain time earns you a medal on that level. Levels are challenging without ever being overly difficult, and medals add more to the game for those looking for an additional challenge. More icons and game elements (such as elevators, disappearing platforms, and more) are introduced slowly over the course of the game. The pacing of new elements is great and eliminates the need for a tutorial. This was really wonderfully done.

There aren't a lot of different things to see in RollOut, but what is there was carefully drawn and looks great. The music is soothing and catching, reminding me to stay calm and think about the game. While RollOut is definitely a platformer, it's also a bit of a puzzle game. In a lot of the levels, I would begin by having no idea how to go about getting to the exit. Because each level loops, I was able to simply begin hitting different icons and seeing where I went. Eventually what I needed to do would become clear to me, and the next challenge was to correctly execute it!

Fishing Cactus, the developer, did everything right with RollOut. It starts with a simple concept. Over the course of the game, a great depth of mechanics are introduced slowly. The difficulty increases at a steady rate without ever feeling unfair yet still challenges the player. Best of all, RollOut is fun! RollOut is definitely worth the $0.99 price tag and is a must have!
