Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, provided to me by Konami, is the newest addition to the well-known soccer franchise. Players will quickly notice that the game looks fantastic and has good music too. The game features a variety of leagues and cups as well as quick matches. Fans will have lots to complete.

PES has three control schemes – joystick with two buttons, joystick with “one touch,” and accelerometer with “one touch.” “One touch” allows you to control the game by tapping or holding on the screen. I preferred the joystick with buttons, but you'll probably want to try all three. The game has a wide variety of challenges to tackle. First there's Quick Match and Exhibition Match if you want to jump into the game quickly. There are also six leagues in League Match and eleven cups! Lastly there are two UEFA Club Competitions – UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. I don't follow soccer, so I can't say how accurate the teams, colors, or leagues are, but lots are included, and it's quite impressive. For each cup, league, and club competition, you can earn a trophy. These trophies are viewable in one location from the menu. Besides showing the trophy, the difficulty in which it was earned is also displayed. This is great for collectors and completionists. I always love having a place in a game to easily view what I've accomplished.

The first thing I noticed about Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 was the music. It uses a nice selection of rock songs that went well with the game. Of course, I quickly noticed the graphics next. PES looks outstanding. As my friend watched me played, he remarked that he didn't realize iPhone games could look anywhere near that good. After scoring a goal, PES goes into a replay mode. You can slow the game down, fast forward, rewind, and change the viewing angle to get a good look at the action. There's lots of detail in the graphics, and I didn't notice any slowdown or problems even though I used an original iPhone.

Konami really put a lot of care into this highly polished game. The most important part though is that in addition to the great graphics and features, PES is a fun game. My only complaint is about the way you're given control of whichever player is closest to the ball. When control switches suddenly, the newly controlled player will sometimes end up running in the wrong direction because of where you were aiming previously. I'd prefer if the game didn't automatically switch control. Regardless, PES is still very fun, and there are a variety of modes and difficulties so beginners and veterans can all enjoy the game. Soccer fans will enjoy Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 by Konami, available now on the iTunes App Store for $6.99.
